Takeaways

What 2026 testing told us.

AI

AI is reshaping the market.

Beste, Hostinger, Framer and Lovable all generate sites from prompts. Expect most builders to ship AI design assistants by late 2026.

Free tiers

Free plans are more generous than ever.

Framer offers 1,000 free pages, Beste gives unlimited pages, and Wix keeps widening its free feature set.

Design

Design quality has levelled up.

Squarespace, Webflow and Framer lead, but even entry-level builders now produce professional-looking sites.

Domains

Free custom domains are still rare.

A custom domain, unlimited pages and responsive pages for free, with only a small badge. Builders that still paywall custom domains are falling behind.

How we test.

Every score comes from direct testing. No sponsored placements, no advertising influence on rankings.

  1. Build a real site

A free account on every platform and a complete website from scratch. No press accounts, no shortcuts.

  2. Test every core feature

Editor, templates, SEO settings, mobile, ecommerce and integrations, documented with screenshots and notes.

  3. Run performance audits

Google Lighthouse on every site we build: speed, accessibility, best practices and SEO. Slow builders lose points.

  4. Score six categories

Ease of use, design, features, SEO, ecommerce and value, each scored 1 to 5, then averaged.

  5. Weigh the free plan

Storage, bandwidth, branding and feature limits. What the free plan actually includes, in writing.

  6. Re-test quarterly

Builders ship constantly. Every platform is re-tested at least once a quarter, scores and all.

Questions, answered.

What is the best free website builder in 2026?
Based on our testing of 22 platforms, Wix earns the highest overall score at 4 out of 5: the most complete feature set, a full store from the Core plan and the new Wix Harmony AI editor. Beste (3.9) has one of the strongest free plans, with a free custom domain, unlimited pages, only a small Beste badge and strong AI building. Framer (3.9) leads on design quality. If you can pay from day one, Squarespace (3.7) and WordPress.com (3.6) round out our top five.
Are free website builders really free forever?
Most free website builders on our list offer truly free plans you can use indefinitely with no credit card required. Wix, WordPress.com, Webflow, Framer, Carrd, and Tilda all provide permanent free tiers. The exceptions are Squarespace (14-day free trial only) and Hostinger (14-day free trial, no publishing during the trial). Free plans do come with trade-offs: you will typically see the platform's branding on your site, use a subdomain instead of a custom domain, and have limited storage or bandwidth.
Can I use a custom domain with a free website builder?
On most free plans, you will use the platform's subdomain (for example, yoursite.wixsite.com or yoursite.webflow.io). Connecting a custom domain like yourname.com usually requires upgrading to a paid plan. Among the builders we tested, only Beste lets you connect a custom domain with SSL on its free plan, and Google Sites allows one after verifying the domain through Google Search Console. Otherwise, consider a builder with affordable entry-level plans, such as Hostinger or Wix.
Which free website builder is best for small businesses?
Wix is our top recommendation for small businesses thanks to its wide feature set, marketing tools, and appointment booking on paid plans. For businesses on a tight budget, Hostinger offers 0% transaction fees on its paid ecommerce plans. If your priority is a clean, professional look, Squarespace offers eye-catching design quality during its 14-day trial.
Which free website builder has the best SEO tools?
Wix and WordPress.com offer the strongest SEO capabilities on free plans. Wix includes a built-in SEO Wizard, meta tag editing, and structured data support. WordPress.com benefits from a naturally SEO-friendly architecture and clean permalink structure. Webflow also gives advanced users fine-grained control over meta tags, Open Graph data, and semantic HTML. For serious SEO work, connecting a custom domain through a paid plan will yield better results.
Can I build an online store with a free website builder?
Yes. Wix offers limited free store features that let you design a store layout, though accepting payments requires a paid plan. Hostinger stands out with 0% transaction fees on its paid ecommerce plans. For a full-featured online store with custom domains, payment processing, and inventory management, you will eventually want a paid ecommerce plan. Check our best free ecommerce builders guide for a detailed comparison.
What is the difference between Wix, WordPress.com, and Webflow?
These three builders target different audiences. Wix is the most beginner-friendly, with a true drag-and-drop editor where you place elements anywhere on the page. WordPress.com is content-first, built around its powerful blogging engine and block editor, making it built for writers and publishers. Webflow is designed for experienced designers and developers, giving you CSS-level precision in a visual interface. Think of it this way: Wix is for everyone, WordPress is for writers, and Webflow is for designers.
How do we test and rank free website builders?
Our editorial team signs up for every builder, creates real websites, and evaluates each platform across six categories: ease of use, design flexibility, features and tools, SEO capabilities, ecommerce options, and free plan quality. We score each category on a 1 to 5 scale and calculate the average. We also run Google Lighthouse audits on sites built with each platform to measure real-world performance. Our reviews are updated quarterly to reflect the latest features and pricing changes.
